Fulham vs Liverpool
Few teams better exemplify the term “yo-yo club,” which is frequently used before a new season, than Fulham, who are making their third appearance in the Premier League (PL) in five years.
Fulham has lost its opening league game the last five times they’ve returned to the top flight, making them one of the bookies’ favorites to be demoted once more. As a result, you might see those odds get even shorter following matchday one!
The Cottagers approach the season having dominated the Championship last year, but manager Marco Silva hasn’t let his players relax as he has added Andreas Pereira and the highly regarded Joo Palhinha to his squad.
That should fill the vacuum left by Fábio Carvalho, who left for none other than opponents Liverpool. However, Fulham will feel anything is possible because they avoided losing to the Premier League heavyweights in their previous season (W1, D1).
Liverpool played as many games as they could during the historic 2021–2022 season, winning two trophies but narrowly missing out on a record treble or quadruple.
A solid start to the season is anticipated given that they are playing freshly promoted opponents to open their campaign for the fourth consecutive season and have won the previous three by a combined score of 11-4. The issue is how they will recover this time around.
Sadio Mané and Divock Origi, two Reds who were much loved by their supporters, left Anfield. Big-money signing Darwin Nunez, who scored on his professional debut in Liverpool’s thrilling 3-1 Community Shield victory over Manchester City, replaced the latter and took his jersey number.
Players to keep an eye on: Mohamed Salah will be trying to extend his matchday one record, having scored in Liverpool’s PL opener in each of the last five seasons. Aleksandar Mitrovi has never lost a Premier League match when scoring at home (W8, D3).
Hot stat: Both teams have found the net in six of Liverpool’s last seven PL trips to Craven Cottage.
Tottenham vs Southampton
Only the most pessimistic of Tottenham fans could have predicted that within a few months after Son Heung-min and the team’s victory over Manchester City in the opening round of the 2021/22 Premier League (PL), they would have a new manager in charge.
However, a promising unbeaten streak to close that season (W4, D2) will soon return them to Champions League play and the pursuit of their first significant trophy in fifteen years.
Giampiero Ventrone, a conditioning coach who has won championships with both Juventus and Guangzhou Evergrande, was brought in by Antonio Conte, and he has put the team through such a draining preseason that some players have puked during drills.
Richarlison, Yves Bissouma, and veteran Ivan Perisic are just a few of the intriguing summer additions that will help Conte accept no less than three points at home, where Spurs won six of their past seven Premier League games (L1) by scoring 20 goals.
In both of their 2021/22 Premier League matches, Southampton was one of four teams to defeat Tottenham, but other than that, Ralph Hasenhüttl’s team finished in the bottom half for the fourth time in a row.
Although Hasenhüttl has spent the preseason gushing over fresh young arrivals like Irish goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu and 19-year-old forward Sékou Mara, one could forgive him for lacking in optimism.
His first task is to show that the 3-2 victory at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium from last season, which followed losses in their six previous away games against Spurs, was no fluke.
For the nearly relegated Saints, who dropped more points (29) from winning positions than any other club in the 2021/22 PL, it was the kind of result that was sadly uncommon.
Hasenhüttl is focusing on strengthening their defense as a crucial area for growth, and German under-21 international Armel Bella-Kotchap is a significant addition.
Players to keep an eye on: Son Heung-min has started in five of his previous six H2H matches across all competitions and has scored more goals (12) against Southampton than any other club worldwide.
In the meantime, Southampton earned points from Ché Adams’ four goals this year (W3, D1), including the game-winning goal against Spurs.
Everton vs Chelsea
Everton’s manager Frank Lampard will be anxious to avoid a recurrence of that disastrous performance this time around. Everton only managed to secure their Premier League (PL) safety in the penultimate game of the previous season.
But with the “Toffees” appearing to have so few alternatives in attack, camp confidence won’t likely be high going into this match.
Richarlison, a vital player, was transferred to Tottenham in the summer, and last week it was reported that Dominic Calvert-Lewin, a striker, will likely need to miss a significant amount of time due to injury.
Even though the odds appear to be stacked against them, Everton has recently defeated Chelsea at home.
The host team has won all four of their recent Premier League encounters at Goodison Park, and in their last five trips to the stadium, the London club has only managed one goal.
Chelsea has seen a summer of upheaval, and during the first transfer window under new owner Todd Boehly, the club has once again shown off its financial muscle.
Both Kalidou Koulibaly and Raheem Sterling are expected to make their first appearances for the Blues in this game. Chelsea’s manager Thomas Tuchel will be hoping that both can be instrumental in the team’s third straight PL season-opening victory.
The Blues have scored precisely three goals in each of their last two opening-day victories over Crystal Palace and Brighton. Chelsea did the same thing at Leeds United in their last away league game of the previous Premier League season.
The was the last game in a run of eight away Premier League games during which they scored on all but one occasion, though that one exception came on their most recent trip to Goodison Park (L 1-0).
Jordan Pickford, the Everton goalkeeper, had a career-high five clean sheets versus Chelsea.
New Chelsea acquisition Sterling has two goals in his career at Goodison Park and after hitting three goals on the first day of the 2019–20 Premier League season, he may be daydreaming of becoming the first player to achieve two hat-tricks.
Everton has the longest active top-flight winning streak with an unblemished start in each of the last ten seasons (W4, D6).
