Ahead of the Champions League final featuring Liverpool and Real Madrid, there are obvious reasons why football greats and ex players have called on Mo Salah to outshine Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo and possibly win the Balon d’or, making him the second African player to achieve such feat in football history.

George Weah became the first and only African footballer to have won the prestigious award in 1995, even though his country never gained World Cup ticket. Football has changed and the criteria is ever increasing following Ronaldo and Messi’s domination in the last decade. Mo Salah couldn’t have entered the frame if not for his consistent goal scoring record which has won him the English PFA awards and golden boot. The humble Liverpool winger has become instant fan favourites and many lovers of the game cannot wait for the Egyptian to break the domination of the two greatest football rivals of all time in Ronaldo and Messi.

Salah has a great chance if he can win the Champions League with Liverpool and perhaps follow up with an exceptional World Cup campaign with Egypt. Ronaldo would have a slim chance especially if Real Madrid fail to win the Champions League and the third contender, Messi has to be exceptional in World Cup if he is to be considered (considering the fact that he had won the Spanish League).

Lampard, Muller and obviously STeven Gerrard are some of the top players rallying the Egyptian to win this year’s Balon d’or. If he does, he would become the new George Weah of the 20th century
